  • arrived to be Archdeacon of Vancouver Island and was appointed also to be rector of Saint John's.
  • was confronted by the ending of the financial benefits of the gold rush which resulted in an economic depression.
  • found it difficult to get agreement among parish leaders on methods of increasing “pew holders” fees or by having a capital campaign to alleviate financial distress of the parish.
  • felt unable to fulfill both the demands of parish life as well as the expectations and provincial travel of an archdeacon.
  • returned to England in 1867 and the Reverend Francis Gribble fulfilled an interim ministry until his appointment to Saint Paul's, Esquimalt the following year.
