  • arrived from his position with the national office of General Synod where he had worked in administration of the Council of Social Service and, since 1970, in executive direction of the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund.
  • as a forceful preacher ever challenged the congregation and community with Gospel imperatives of concern for peace with justice, human rights, and God's preferential option for the poor.
  • promoted educational programmes that led to action and advocacy around issues of poverty, injustice, and human dignity.
  • raised awareness and support, partly from a background with the World Council of Churches and other international agencies, for global injustices and for liberation movements in Africa and Latin America.
  • spearheaded action and involvement of members of the congregation in many environmental and social justice issues - Earth Day, Clayoquot Sound, Nisga'a Treaty, Project North, Nestle boycott,
  • identified, encouraged, and supported individual parishioners who took leadership in various areas of concern. Among others, naming only a few, were Mary Wynne Ashford and Daniel Noonan (against nuclear arms proliferation), Mavis Gillie (Project North, Aboriginal Rights Coalition, Aboriginal Neighbours), Fran Ashwell and Susan MacRae (Nestle boycott because of unethical bottle feeding formula practices especially in Third World countries), Elinor Powell (Justice Institute and Mediation Centre), Bill Ashwell (PWRDF and Ten Days for World Development) as well as those who served in municipal and provincial government.
  • concerned for “street chaplaincy”, appointed full-time personnel to this position at the same time convincing diocesan officials of the need for its inclusion for support from Anglicans in Mission,
  • was an original supporter of the Upper Room (Our Place) soup kitchen.
  • created full-time staff positions for Youth Ministry as well as for Family Life.
  • encouraged development of the music ministry and initiated programmes to encourage young musicians and organ scholars.
  • encouraged sacrificial giving and gave strong support to Anglicans in Mission stewardship appeal.
  • served in diocesan synod matters as Archdeacon of Victoria.
  • elected to represent the diocese at national General Synod and served on the Long Range Planning Committee.
  • gave impetus to the Christmas Pageant as an outreach to the community and initiated the Lenten Noon Day Forum for a similar reason as well as an educational event for parishioners.
  • brought to fruition plans for beautification and greater utility of the Chancel and Sanctuary - opening up the space, constructing moveable staging, enhancing the ceiling and replacing the brocade wall hanging with the carved oak reredos.
  • initiated renovation and expansion of meeting and office space in the Parish House making for more useable space and building the new office as a connecting link between the Church and House.
  • encouraged development of the use of space in serving the needs of the neighbourhood and community (Single Parents' Resource Centre, Emergency Food Bank, Youth Orchestra, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Aboriginal Rights Coalition, etc.)
  • was assisted by associates Daniel Noonan and Susanne House, by assistants David Rolfe, Fred Peirce, Wee Chong Tan, Gerald Burch, Christopher Lonsdale, Trefor Williams, and Charles Wallace as well as by lay personnel and many, many lay volunteers.
  • announced his retirement from Saint John's in 1997. The interim ministry was led by Susanne House.
