This Advent I shared in the Little Cabinet in the office foyer called ‘A Complex Grief.’ When I began this work I wanted to remember the every day love in our ordinary lives that keep our world together. I made expressive ink drawings of local roses found in neighbourhood gardens.

These came to represent the power of grief as an outpouring of love that dispels the dark and in the drawings, we see how light and dark are in relationship with each other to make the image of a rose – which represents the presence of love even in the midst of difficulty.

As I made these drawings they provided a way for me to understand the story of Creation. At the very beginning of our spiritual tradition, the Spirit of God hovers over what is dark, and what had no certainty or stability. This is the material God creates with. God is present- hovering, waiting, watching, drawing out light to illumine darkness so that something new, born of both may emerge. My mind, heart and hand,  hovered over the these drawings, doing the same.

As co-creators with Christ, we are called to put our minds, hearts and hands to work and to tend the light of life. Especially in difficult times, we are invited to participate in the ongoing work of creation and give space for light and love to comfort and bring nourishment to the darkness where in the beginning life began.
