Evensong is a short (~45 minues) service of readings, prayers, and choral music - an opportunity to be enfolded in ancient words, beautiful music, thoughtful prayer, and one of the most inspiring spaces in Victoria. The language of the liturgy is ancient - the words and prayers taken from the 16th-century Book of Common Prayer - but the space is expansive and quietly affirming, with most of the service being carried by the singing of the choir, in settings of the responses, the psalms, the canticles, and a choral anthem.
Evensong is very different from what you might expect when you go to church: a service of quiet contemplation, little overt participation, but with lots of room for quiet thoughtful engagement in whatever way is most meaningful to you.
This service, an English adaptation of the much older Evening Offices which predate the Reformation, has been offered around the world in Anglican churches for hundreds of years, a unique and resonant combination of prayer and scripture, as well as being a vehicle for some of the most beautiful sacred music written. At St John's we also offer a short sermon or reflection and a couple of congregational hymns
This service is also livestreamed on YouTube and on our website.
