A skilled chef can take a single main ingredient and prepare and present it in multiple tasty ways, preserving its nutritional value and integrity, while also highlighting a variety of flavours. Did you know the tradition of the Church, from ancient times until today, is that the same can be done with Holy Scripture? The general teaching of the "fourfold sense of Scripture" began in the early church, progressed through Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and beyond. It affirms that a single scripture can be prepared and presented -- with integrity -- in a variety of nutritious ways to feed the spirit/soul. This morning, we experience a small taste of this fourfold sense of Scripture, with a brief sampler based on Mark's account of Jesus healing Simon's mother-in-law of a fever.
