As has become customary for St John's we will be posting daily throughout Advent with reflections, thoughts, art, music, poetry and more to offer a brief moment of contemplation during this busy season. The theme for this year follows our Advent theme of Light and Darkness, using as inspiration Psalm 139 verse 12
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You. New King James Version
There is more nuance in our Scriptural story and in the traditions of the Church of the interplay between light and dark than the simplistic reading of light, good/dark, bad which has become a dominant and sadly unquestioned lens in today's Church. In the course of reading Barbara Brown Taylor's 'Learning to Walk in the Dark' (our Advent book) we are reminded of the God found in light and darkness, of the need for both for growth, and the calling to overcome our fear of the dark. We are hoping that exploring these themse in art, poetry, music, and more will add some depth and breadth to our shared Advent experience.
Please do come back and check our Advent blog, daily, starting on Sunday 30th of November.
