Guide for Parish Council

You've volunteered to sit on parish council, now what? This helpful guide will provide the information you need to make an informed decision before you let your name stand and will be a useful reference after you have been elected.

Canons and Regulations of the Diocese

The canons and regulations of the diocese outline the legal and procedural framework for the diocese. The canons are regularly reviewed by the Canons Committee of the diocese and it is the job of that committee to prepare amendments as requested for presentation to synod.

Diocesan Policies

The Diocese has established the following policies for all parishes in the Diocese.

  • Information Security
  • Privacy
  • Sexual Misconduct
  • Social media

Safe Church

The Safe Church program provides training to help ensure our churches are places of safety from the harm of misconduct that can occur in situations when there is an imbalance of power. It involves both clergy and lay volunteers (e.g. wardens, treasurers, youth-workers, musicians, and Sunday school teachers).

Synod

Synods (or regional conventions) are usually held every two years. Delegates are elected from parishes across the diocese to attend. These are arguably the most important meetings held in a diocese because it is here that decisions about the future direction (strategy, finance, vision) are made. When a synod is not in session, Diocesan Council acts as the synod between synods, making these important decisions on behalf of the parishes.
