Service, in our hierarchical world, is considered demeaning. The idea of being a servant suggests losing control, of being in thrall to someone else. Jesus, however, used being a servant, or even a slave, to God as an aspiration for those who would follow his way - he talked of having to chose between serving God or serving money, he used stories about servants to describe how his followers should act, he even set the example of being a servant as he washed the feet of his disciples at their last gathering before he was arrested and condemned to death.

Scripture

After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.     John 13.12-15
