This work of art is just one by an exceptional artist, Vaughn Warren, from Kamloops, BC. I met Vaughn through my partner, Dr Sabina Singh, and was impressed by his drive, his compassion, and his creativity as soon as I first spoke to him. I hope that sometime soon we might be able to commission him to create an artwork to be put in place in our grounds of St John The Divine in Victoria!
Artists such as Vaughn give a glimpse into a world that is both deeply rooted and grounded in the everyday, and also takes inspiration from the 'big ideas' of First Nations Stories and artwork, of the landscape of the interior of British Columbia, of the beauty of all that surrounds us, and of the imagination that art can provide - like so much art it connects us with ourselves, with one another, and with the God of Small Things.
But ask the animals, and they will teach you;
the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you;
and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
Who among all these does not know
that the hand of the Lord has done this?
In God's hand is the life of every living thing
and the breath of every human being. Job 12.7-10
