Listening to an interview on CBC Radio yesterday I heard a discussion about logging, sustainability, reforestation, and possible solutions to the Forestry Crisis here in British Columbia (which I am sure is echoed in over forested regions worldwide). One of the issues, said the speaker, is that the balanced habitats which allowed trees to grow and mature rarely exist now - the canopy which keeps light out and allows different species to flourish is gone, the fallen trees which are allowed to rot and become 'mother trees', homes to a variety of life are much more rare than is the case in balanced ecosystems.

Without both light and dark, without the shadows to protect biodiversity, the whole of the forest is impoverished.
