The Choristers of St John the Divine is an auditioned choir which sings sacred classical choral music with an emphasis on English Church Music from the Renaissance through the 21st century, and on music of the Baroque. It sings for services at St John’s, and as the Chamber Singers, in concerts with the Victoria Baroque Players, with whom it has presented many well-regarded and exciting performances of such 18th-century works as Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Bach motets and cantatas. Highlights of the most recent season include a performance of Bach’s John Passion, and liturgical music including Gerald Finzi’s God is gone up, Jonathan Dove’s Missa Brevis, Herbert Howell’s Like as the Hart, and music by Byrd, Tallis, Haydn, and Pärt, amonst many others. The choir is committed to singing only high-quality repertoire, at the best standard possible. The choir is supported by four MacRae Choral Scholars, the Sutton Organ Scholar, and one of the largest and finest pipe organs in the province in congenial acoustics in one of Victoria’s most beautiful neo-Gothic buildings. The Chamber choir sings one Choral Evensong and three Sunday mornings each month. Rehearsals are Thursdays 7-9pm.
