Come sing with Choristers of St John and experience the liturgical year through repertoire spanning from Gregorian chant and polyphony to Britten, Howells, and newer! We have room for singers of all voice types who are good sight-readers and have choral experience and good musicality.
Auditions for choral scholarships are held each year at the beginning of September; the 2019-20 MacRae Choral Scholarships have been awarded. However, there are still student bursaries available for all voice types. For more information, and to arrange an audition, contact the Music Director, David Stratkauskas ([email protected]).

Each month during term time, the Choristers sing three Sunday morning Parish Eucharists and the monthly Choral Evensong. The repertoire - anthems, motets, mass and evening canticle settings - is drawn from the best of Anglican and Western church music of the last five centuries, including music by John Tavener, Mozart, William Byrd, Durufle, Finzi, Howells, Michael Finnissy, and Tallis, amongst others. The Choristers also sing for special events such as the Nine Lessons and Carols for Christmas, and as the St John's Chamber Choir, in highly-regarded concerts with the Victoria Baroque, with whom they have presented many significant 18th-century works, such as Handel’s Dixit Dominus, various Bach cantatas and motets, and Bach’s St John Passion. The Choristers rehearse Thursday evenings, and at a number of dedicated rehearsals before each Baroque concert.
The Choristers have a membership of around 20 singers, many of whom are students at the University of Victoria or the Victoria Conservatory, and are supported by the four MacRae Choral Scholars, the Sutton Organ Scholar, and numerous bursaries for students. Requirements for membership include decent sight-reading skills, as well as a good sense of choral sound and musical style. If you are interested, contact the Music Director, David Stratkauskas to arrange an informal audition/interview.
