Eucharist: Peace - Not A Passive Thing

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.  Matthew 5.9

Not an easy peace
Not an insignificant peace
Not a half-hearted peace
but the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you now.

This is the proclamation at the Peace in the Iona Abbey Worship Book Communion*.  It is a reminder that a commitment to the peace of Christ is not a commitment to acceptance, to allowing the world to remain as it us, to ignoring or hiding from pain and injustice, but it is a commitment to working in partnership with the Spirit of God to a life of peace. It is a commitment to working with the Spirit of God to a world of peace and healing, to standing against all that brings dis-ease and destruction to human beings, to the peace of God as proclaiming in the Reign of Shalom, the Kingdom of God.  This peace may be painful, it will certainly be costly, but it is a partnership in the peace of Christ.  What demands does the peace of Christ make on you today?
