The Church Wardens
Wardens come in two flavors, rectors
and peoples, and in two sizes, deputy warden and warden. The peoples
warden is elected by the congregation at the annual vestry meeting,
and represents the democratic governance of the church. The rectors
warden is appointed by the rector, symbolizing the prophetic leadership
of the church which is not tied to popular opinion. Together the rector
and wardens form the executive of the Parish Council.
Wardens are elected (or appointed) for
a 4 year term, two years as deputy warden, and two years as warden.
The terms of office vary in other churches. Both wardens and deputy
wardens attend wardens meetings with the rector, treasurer and
other invited guests (if any), monthly and as occasionally required.
Decisions and recommendations to Parish Council are made at those meetings
regarding the business and witness of the Church.
Wardens also attend other church committees
based on their areas of interest and personal skills. All committees
report to the Congregation at the annual vestry meeting. Wardens also
have ceremonial duties, such as escorting the Bishop when he is present
at St Johns.
