The Church of St. John the Divine, Victoria, B.C. is seeking a half-time Family Ministry Coordinator. The position coordinates and leads programs with children and youth of all ages as well as with parents and families. The successful applicant will work in close coordination with a staff team of clergy and laity to serve the needs of a downtown parish with multiple staff and programs. This position commences August 2010.

Position Description:Coordinator of Family Ministries
Goals of the Position
Facilitates the Vision and Mission of the Family Ministry Framework Policy.
Supports the children and their families in their growth in the Christian faith and in their connection with St. John’s.
Works cooperatively with families and parishioners at St. John’s to develop, coordinate and implement family ministry programs.
Typical duties and responsibilities (including, not limited to)
To work with an advisory committee on a regular basis to organize programming.
To seek out strategies to implement programs.
To be familiar, up to date, and able to work with other parishioner groups, staff and programs at St. John’s to further the Family Ministry.
To assess and develop educational resources, both human and material.
To support and facilitate parishioners’ development and sharing of skills in the context of family ministries.
To ensure that the needs of the various youth age groups within the Family Ministry are addressed.
To provide a program of confirmation preparation for youth, in consultation with the clergy.
To facilitate opportunities for children and youth to have meaningful participation in the life of the Parish.
To facilitate opportunities for families to come together for social, educational and worship purposes.
To respond to the pastoral needs of families in consultation with the clergy as needed.
To advocate within the congregation with and for families.
To ensure current criminal record checks for all volunteers working with children.
To continue to read and study, for greater understanding of living as a Christian in the world today.
To maintain a healthy style of life, seeking balance and perspective in meeting personal physical, spiritual and relational needs.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Is responsible for the screening and supervision of all people working with children and youth.
Accountability
Reports to, and is supervised by, the Rector who is responsible for performance appraisal.
Is accountable to follow the St. John’s staff guidelines and the values which uphold them.
Qualifications
The successful applicant will have:
Experience in all or part of the following ministry areas: youth ministry, children’s and family ministry, Christian education and formation.
A strong passion for the Christian faith within the Anglican or similar tradition and within the ethos of St. John’s congregation, and will have the ability to articulate it to young people.
A commitment to children, young people, and parents, and will value them as an integral part of the total spiritual and social development of the parish family.
Excellent leadership skills and ability to educate, inspire, and empower young people, teachers, volunteers, and parents.
Genuine affection for children and young people.
A current criminal record check.
