During July of this year, we spent one wonderful week at what has always been our family’s favourite holiday destination: Sorrento Centre http://www.sorrento-centre.bc.ca/ From the time our children were small through to their young adult years, a summer without Sorrento was considered a disaster Friendships made there have continued through the years to the present day.
The course we took in July was three-pronged with three leaders Dr. Martin Bunton’s topic was “Changing World” and he dealt specifically with the rise and development of Islam Today’s situation in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the complexities of reconciling cultural and religious differences were all part of his presentation.
Herbie O’Driscoll spoke on “Timeless Scriptures” How refreshing to see the Bible described in great sweeping strokes as a five act drama, with the acts being ‘Creation’, ‘Failure’, ‘Story of Israel’, ‘Story of Jesus’ and ‘Early Church’ There is one more act, the sixth, and it is called ‘Us’.
“Growing Church” was Logan McMenamie’s subject Has the Church relevance in today’s world? What is it that the Church is called to be and to do in the twenty-first century? Whatever it is, are we ready? We were invited to study the success of the Starbucks chain and to answer some tough questions regarding its popularity and appeal within society in comparison with the apparent lack of popularity and appeal of the Church.
So much to think about as we enjoyed afternoons at the beach, campfire and sing-along, optional hikes, and of course first rate meals in the dining room The Centre was full, only a few tent sites being vacant Tent and trailer sites, cabanas, and lodge accommodation took care of about eighty adult guests with fifty-five young people For us, the week was all the more special for having our daughter and two grandchildren there with us. We felt so fortunate to have this time together with them Can there be a better way to visit with one’s family?
Come to think of it—can there be a better way to spend a week of summer than at Sorrento Centre?
Sorrento Centre is located on Shuswap Lake on HWY 1, about seventy-five km east of Kamloops, BC Besides taking courses, people may use the Centre for rest and relaxation and for a weekend or stopover. Pick up a brochure in the Church for more information.
